2020: This was originally a 1 star review in 2011. I'm Updating this review as we've revisited Sushi Ya a couple of times since. The last couple of times we've been there, the service and food have been exceptional. Low wait times, very attentive but not intrusive wait staff and excellent quality of food. Given these experiences, I'm adjusting my review from 1 star to 4 stars. Nicely done Sushi Ya.
My husband and I ordered through doordash. Half of the order was incorrect. It took multiple calls to the restaurant and finally talking to the manager/"sushi chef" Hernando for him to first argue with me and then see that he did in fact mix up orders. He did apologize and offered a refund for the missing items only. The food itself was disappointing. It's what I would expect from gas station sushi. For example, the Philly roll salmon was chopped tartar rather than a slice of the fish, the "crunchy" roll was greasy, and the rice had a strong vinegar taste with the wrong texture. Definitely too expensive for the quality of fish, sushi skills, or service.
So, I had high hopes for this place but let's begin. When my wife and I ordered on the phone was great no problem the girl that answered and took our order was nice. We arrive and we are greeted when we enter the place. Here is where things went wrong. We heard the cook yelling at one of the front room ladies because he was mad he had gotten our order wrong and didn't read the ticket correctly. We asked for zero onions in our food because of severe allergies. What happens I get onions in my food mixed in. The food did not look good at all. We were also given the miso soups with tons of onions in it. My wife received vegetables in her dish that she asked for not to in there. What happens she gets salad like that's still vegetables. So when we asked for it to be corrected you would think new food would be made, nope the chef just decides to scrap the salad away and spread out the Noddles which still had salad in it because he did that. No to mention the food was too hot and spicy to eat but does not mention it will be that way in the menu. I asked for the combo that comes with tempura and got pot stickers instead and also when the chef had to make me some he did two very mall shrimps with not much tempura batter around it, they wee very poorly and it was stingy to just give two even with the extra long wait as well. As a disabled military veteran I would of liked to receive a discount as well. I got my money returned but they couldn't take the food back even though we brought all the food with us so we drove around and gave it and some waters we had in the car to this homeless couple because we didn't want the food going to waste and being thrown in the trash the couple was very thankful but my wife and wish more could be done to help the homeless in this area, the next president needs to fix this problem immediately. Now would my wife go back to this place never again.
Nice cozy spot for a pair and sake. Reasonable prices, good service and the quality of food undeniable.
Great place if you like waiting a half hour for your food. Every time I go here it’s the same excuse “sorry we just got so many orders”.....
